Only Love Can Hold the Truth

This past week in our weekly newsletter, Richard Rohr once again spoke on the Way of Peace and this week’s topic was about, “Only love can hold the truth.” What does this really mean? There are so many clichés about love, “love is blind,” “if you love something, set it free,” and of course “love conquers all.” The word “love” is such an overused word that its meaning gets often times lost, misused, or misunderstood. “Only love can hold the truth,” is looking at ourselves when we take away our ego.  What’s left when we remove all of our labels, worries and control.  It’s at that point where we can start looking at how love can hold the truth.

Richard Rohr quotes Thomas Aquinas, “We must honor those who agree with us and those who disagree with us.” And along that same note, “No problem can be solved by the same consciousness that caused it,” stated Albert Einstein. Rohr speaks about the ego that it often times creates opposition because it allows us to compare ourselves to others, put others down to elevate our own ego. When we strip ourselves from our false self and honor people who agree and disagree with our thinking, we can then make progress in a peaceful, loving way.

Okay, the hard part, what does this look like in our day-to-day living? People who know how to push our buttons, ones that get on your very last nerve – honor them even when we think they are wrong? That’s what we are to do and so as I look ahead to this next week, I have a lofty goal in front of me even if it looks like baby steps.

Listen to this week’s 15 minute clip and let me know what you think.
